Jorge Yázpik was born in Mexico City in 1955. He studied at the National School of Plastic Arts of UNAM under the tutelage of Ignacio Salazar, Sebastián, Francisco Moyao, Gerda Gruber, Juana Gutiérrez and Gilberto Aceves Navarro among others.
His work is designed from a random feeling, where the material has an important part of definition about its development. In the case of direct carving which is the work that predominates in this sample, the choice of the mine, the understanding and rules of its material structure suggest the shape and composition.
In its size we see a dual solution: the natural and rough form preserves in a significant proportion, Yázpik subtracts smooth and polished textures that modify the color, the perception of the voids, contrasts of light, reflections and shadows produced by cuts, Recesses and profiles that give the volume a certain minimalist sophistication.
His taste for materiality is expressed in the handling and discovery of the diversity and richness of supports, including stone, bronze, wood and the combination of them from a more pragmatic, tangible and scientific interest, more than conceptual. |
