BIOGRAPHY
A resident of Guanajuato since 1996, Dean Gazeley realized his formal art studies first in Emily Carr School of Art + Design, Vancouver, Canada, and later in France in the Ecole Albert Defois, in the atelier of the acclaimed American figurative painter Ted Seth Jacobs. He furthered his studies of sculpture at the Atelier Vaugel, also in Anjou, France.
Since 1992, Gazeley has participated in numerous collective exhibitions, the most relevant of which were in the following galleries and museums: Galerie Les Marechaux (Anjou, France), el Chateau de Vihiers, the Canadian Federation of Arts, Montgomery Fine Arts, and Sarah Dobbs Gallery (all in Canada), the Loft Gallery (Puerta Vallarta), Galeria Drexel (Monterrey, Nuevo Leon), 225Gallery (Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA), Museo Gene Byron, the Alhondiga de Granaditas, the Casa de Cultura, the Museo Icongrafico del Quijote, the Museo del Pueblo, the Gallery “Alfonsina Storni”, and the Gallery Corazones (all in Guanajuato, Mexico).
Gazeley presented his first individual exhibition in the Whistler Art Gallery (Canada, 1995), and since then has mounted individual shows in France at the Gallery of Tire-Bouteilles, US at The Virginia Inn (Seattle), and the Gallery Dancing Goats (Washington), as well as in some of the most celebrated exhibition spaces in Mexico, such as el Museo Hospicio Cabañas (Guadalajara), el Museo Casa Diego Rivera (Guanajuato), el Museo de la Ciudad as part of the XXX Festival International Cervantino (Irapuato), Galeria El Estudio de la Casa del Poeta (Mexico City), Galeria Drexel (Monterrey), the Museum of Contemporary Art Primer Deposito, el Museo del Pueblo, el Museo Iconografico del Quijote, y el Congreso del Estado (all in Guanajuato, Mexico).
A recognized portraiture artist, in 2011 Gazeley was selected to paint the portraits of two Federal Senators of Mexico. These works now hang in the Presidents of the Senate Chamber, in Mexico City. He has been honored as well with the following distinctions: invited juror “Festival Madonnari en Guanajuato” (2009), grant recipient “Creador con Trayectoria: Estimulos a la Creacion de las Artes Plasticas, State Institute of Culture of Guanajuato (2007), invited juror for statewide drawing competition “Jose Chavez Morado” (2007), grant recipient from the Institute of Culture of the State of Guanajuato, as well as from the Canadian Embassy (2003), selected artist to represent Canada in the XXX Festival Internacional Cervantino (2002), selected artist for cover art of the trilingual book “la Nieve Inmaculada. Contemporary Canadian Poets” (2002), and grant recipient by “International Residencies for Artists, New York” (2000).
Dean Gazeley began teaching figure drawing in 1996 at the Jericho Art Centre, Vancouver, Canada. Since then he has offered figure drawing classes in the Museo Casa Diego Rivera (2001-2005), and in the Casa de Cultura of Guanajauto (2005-to the present). |
